Practice (homework) is the key to success in math.
The following practice pattern has proven to be very successful… especially for students who do not find that math comes easily.
1. Copy the original problem or data.
2. Show all work; even 1 + 1 = 2. If using a calculator show all of the buttons used.
3. Circle your final answer….THEN check with the book to see if it is correct.
4. If it is not correct:
a. Don’t erase the old work!
b. Start looking for mistakes by checking the copy job, data, instructions and calculations. If a mistake is found put one line through the old work and start the problem again.
c. If no mistake is found:i. Check the examples in the book to see if you are doing the right steps.
ii. Ask for some help. (other students, parents, teacher)
iii. Question if the book’s answer is correct.
d. If you are not able to “solve” the problem then ASK for help in class the next day.
